Tūturu o whiti whakamaua kia tīnā — tīnā! Hui e — tāiki e!
Nau mai, haere mai ki Hiona — ki tēnei whare tapu, ki tēnei wāhi ora, ki tēnei marae o ngā iwi katoa.
Ko Hiona St Stephen's tētahi o ngā whare karakia tino whakahīrahira o Aotearoa — i hangaia e ngā ringa o Te Whakatōhea, ā, i whakatūria hei tohu aroha, hei tohu tūmanako, mō ngā reanga katoa.
Welcome to Hiona St Stephen's Anglican Church, Ōpōtiki.
You are standing at one of New Zealand's most significant bicultural heritage sites — a church built between 1862 and 1864 by the hands of Te Whakatōhea, with timber gifted from their forests, on land at the heart of their rohe.
Within these walls, the full arc of our shared history breathes still — faith and suffering, confiscation and resilience, colonial power and indigenous dignity, separation and the long, sacred walk toward reconciliation.
This is not simply a place of Sunday worship. It is a living taonga — a treasure held jointly by those who built it, those who prayed in it, those who were imprisoned within it, and those who continue to find healing here today.
Come in. Be still. Let the stories speak.
